Safety: For safety, we made sure to have enough open space for people and for the animals to walk around the waiting room. We placed two sofas in the middle where there would be enough room for animals and people to go around. We included a specific fabric for the sofas. The seat frame material is wood and the seat material is foam with polyurethane upholstery.
Function: Our goal for the animal shelter waiting room was to allow it to function with efficiency with an open and clean area. We wanted to make sure visitors have the ability to find where they need to go without feeling lost. We decided to put two sofas that are shaped in the letter S because it does not take up too much space and visitors are able to sit on both sides. One of the sides is facing towards the window where you can see the animals and the other side is facing the wall. We also moved the volunteer desks around to a better space for volunteers to work. We changed the volunteer desks to be adjustable. Overall, the goal of the waiting room is that it has enough space and would be a perfect fit.
Appearance: When visiting the site, the new set up was awkward and unclear to visitors, causing confusion and the need to find a volunteer or worker to ask where to go next. Disorganized waiting rooms/lobbies disrupt the flow of traffic and cause confusion for all parties, so we decided to redesign our client’s area to be straightforward and easy to follow. This may include moving check in areas, volunteers desks, and even the seating arrangements to an order that makes more sense. We decided to keep the same blue and green color. We added paw prints on the floor leading to the way where visitors need to go.
